Sneak Preview – Rachel’s House

As promised, I want to give you a sneak peek into some of my makeovers! I’ve been working with Rachel Pugliese, owner of the stylish shop Brocante Home in Irvington, as we transform her former living room to a dining room. Since she rarely used this space, we moved her living room furniture to her recently added sunroom. Here’s how it looks so far:

The elegant yet inviting space is dressed in a soothing neutral palette and spiced with pops of lavender.

Linen drapery panels and antiqued, mirrored shutters serve as a backdrop for Rachel’s white wood and glass dining table.

Her former dining room now functions as a “library” with a burlap skirted table, two French style chairs, rustic candle sticks and stacks of fabulous books.

Napoleon guards her staircase. (You may remember him from the RW-C Showhouse we decorated last year.)

This week my good pals Leigh Farmer, Cheryl Guedri and I headed over to The Woman’s Club of Richmond to hear Domino Magazine staffers Sara Ruffin Costello and Cynthia Kling dish on interior design. Since Domino was one of the many shelter magazines to fold last year, these now unemployed girls are true experts on decorating in a down economy. Sara and Cynthia offered some great low cost ideas on decorating with humor and an NYC flair. Here’s the scoop:

A new wall color is the best way to get bang for your buck. And as Sara points out, “Painting a room is better and cheaper than therapy!”

Got a stash of fabric samples you’ve never returned to the design center? Use them to make pillows, throws and table cloths or recover a small bench.

If you don’t have the budget for a large painting, group a collection of smaller pictures together to create the effect of a grand one.
